Plant description

The home of the plants are the tropical areas of our earth, there are many different species. The parent plant grows in Sudan, is often planted as an ornamental plant. The flowers are dark red and thick-fleshed, also called rosellas, and stand alone at the leaf axils. Fivefold capsule fruits are formed.

Fruit acids (citric acid, malic acid, tartaric acid), anthocyanins, flavonoids.

Curative effects and application

Hibiscus blossoms are often added to teas, they taste sour and change the appearance of a tea blend to a positive optical effect. Folk medicine knows hibiscus flowers also as easily laxative, spasmolytic, anti-inflammatory. A tea made from hibiscus blossoms tastes refreshing, especially when drunk cold.

Preparation

A larger quantity of tea is made from a heaped tablespoon of dried hibiscus flowers. Pour 1 l of boiling water over it, let it brew for 10 minutes and strain. It can be drunk daily as a house tea.
