Therapeutic target
- Termination of persistent singultus (persistent hiccups).
Therapy recommendations
- As far as there is a triggering disease, its therapy is in the foreground.
- Treatment of persistent singultus:
- Muscle relaxants (e.g., baclofen) in combination with gabapentin (epileptic).
- Prokinetics (drugs that stimulate peristalsis of the upper digestive tract and promote gastric emptying: e.g., metoclopramide)
- Neuroleptics (haloperidol) + prokinetic (e.g., metoclopramide).
- Antidepressants (e.g., amitryptiline).
- Valproate
- Treatment of reflux disease (gastroesophageal reflux disease; frequent reflux (Latin refluere = to flow back) of acidic gastric juice and other gastric contents into the esophagus (food pipe)) or gastroesophageal ulcer (ulcer).
- Proton pump inhibitors (proton pump inhibitors, PPI; acid blockers) [see below of the respective disease].
