Hirsutism treatment

The therapy of hirsutism depends on the underlying cause. If it is a hormonal disorder, it can be treated with special medication. For example, the adrenal form is treated with the glucocorticoid “dexamethasone“, the ovarian form is treated with ovulation inhibitors (drugs that suppress ovulation).

Drugs that act against male hormones can also be helpful. These so-called antiandrogens include cyproterone acetate, chloromadinone acetate and flutamide. A cream containing the active substance eflornithine can be used as a support.

This was developed especially against excessive hair growth in the face and slows down the hair growth in undesirable areas by inhibiting an enzyme. If no organic cause for hirsutism could be found, general cosmetic treatments can be applied, since many women are exposed to a high level of suffering due to the disturbing hair growth. Possible measures are the bleaching of the hair or depilation by laser. If the causes of hirsutism cannot be remedied, one tries to suppress the production of sex hormones with the help of medication.
