Histamine intolerance due to coffee

Coffee naturally contains a varying amount of caffeine. Caffeine is also the component to which people with a histamine intolerance react sensitively. Caffeine releases histamine in the body and, like alcohol, inhibits the enzyme diaminooxidase (DAO).

As a result, the increased histamine cannot be broken down in the body and those affected develop symptoms. Since caffeine alone is responsible for the increased concentration of histamine in the body, decaffeinated coffee can be drunk as an alternative. No increase in endogenous histamine is to be expected when drinking it and it is therefore well tolerated.

Another alternative to the classic coffee can be cereal coffee. However, a complete renunciation of caffeine is not always necessary. In the period after the diagnosis, one should avoid all foods containing histamine if possible. This is the so-called waiting period.

Gradually, it can then be tested how much caffeine the body can tolerate. The individual limit can be quite different. In addition, it is recommended to prepare the coffee or espresso in an espresso maker, as there is less risk of histamine residues remaining in the stove, which would then flow into the next coffee.
