History | Duration of a cold

History

  • Sore throat
  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Cough
  • Lassitude
  • Increased temperature

Usually the cold and its symptoms appear within one day. In the first three to five days, several symptoms often occur simultaneously and in varying degrees. After that, they subside more and more until the virus is removed from the body.

Thus, the symptoms of a cold last for about a week. If the patient does not take sufficient care during a cold or if the immune system is weakened, the symptoms can last longer. Cough: One symptom of the common cold is the cough.

There are two different types of cough, the productive and the dry cough. The inflamed mucous membrane of the airways produces mucus. This settles in the lower respiratory tract, i.e. in the direction of the lungs, and triggers a coughing sensation.

Here, the cough serves as a mechanism for cleaning the airways of the mucus. The duration of the cough is made up as follows: It usually begins a little later than the other symptoms and lasts a little longer. As a rule, it should not last longer than a week once the remaining cold symptoms have subsided.

Cough syrup or cough suppressants are not indicated and not recommended, as the mucus initiates the cleaning of the respiratory tract. A dry cough is most likely to be an irritable cough, which can be treated with cough suppressants. If the cough lasts longer than a month, a doctor must clarify this.

Does a cold in pregnancy last longer?

A cold during pregnancy is usually not a problem for either the mother or the unborn child. The disease can be treated with the usual anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or paracetamol and after a few days there should be an improvement. Usually a cold during pregnancy does not last longer than ten days at most. So-called superinfections can be dangerous if a bacterial colonization is added to the viral infection. Pregnant women must be careful even if the elevated temperature and fever persist for a long time and should always consult a doctor in such cases.
