History | Salivary gland inflammation

History

Most salivary gland inflammations take a good course. Only if they last for a very long time and are insufficiently treated can an abscess form at the bottom of the inflammation. This is the accumulation of pus in a capsule. If this spontaneously empties into the tissue, it can cause blood poisoning (sepsis). Chronic inflammation can also lead to long-term tissue death (atrophy) and scarring.

Prophylaxis

There is a measure that can reduce the risk of developing salivary gland inflammation. These include, above all: You should also drink enough, as this makes it more difficult for bacteria to settle. Special vaccinations (for example against mumps) against salivary gland inflammation caused by particular pathogens also help.

  • Good oral hygiene (rinsing) and
  • Good dental care.
