Hives (Urticaria): Therapy

General measures

  • Avoidance of:
    • Heavy exertion
    • Too long and intense exposure to the sun
    • Strong cold or heat
    • Mechanical irritation
    • Pressure
  • Review of permanent medication due topossible effect on the existing disease.
    • Angioedema: therapy with ACE inhibitors?

Nutritional medicine

  • Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
  • Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
    • Daily total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruits (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits).
    • Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
    • High-fiber diet (whole grains, vegetables).
  • Observance of the following special dietary recommendations:
    • The following foods or food additives may be the cause of urticaria and should be avoided if a repeated association is observed:
      • Milk, eggs
      • Fish, shellfish
      • Strawberries
      • Nuts
  • Avoiding foods high in histamine may improve symptoms of chronic spontaneous urticaria (intervention study; 56 patients). The authors recommend the low-histamine diet for a duration of 3 to 4 weeks for symptom reduction as well as reduction of antihistamine consumption.
  • Selection of appropriate foods based on the nutritional analysis.
