Home Remedies for Back Pain

Every German citizen suffers at least once in his life from back pain. Many sufferers even complain of recurring or even permanent complaints. In addition to serious medical conditions associated with pain in the back, most back problems are organically harmless. More than 90 percent of all back problems can therefore be treated with home remedies.

What helps against back pain?

In many cases, targeted back training is a successful way to relieve back pain. These home remedies include heat, exercise and light massage. Heat promotes blood circulation and thus ensures an increased supply of oxygen and nutrients to the affected tissue. Pollutants and waste products, on the other hand, are more quickly removed from the affected area. Tension and blockages in the muscles are relieved as a result. The sensation of pain gives way to a pleasantly warm loosening of the muscles. Heat can be applied in different ways. Heat patches, for example, are practical for everyday use. These work with plant extracts and are therefore well tolerated by the body. Practically they provide with their warming effect for a dilation of the blood vessels and an improved outflow of inflammatory secretions, whereby not only a pain relief, but besides a faster healing of the pain cause results. In addition, they are uncomplicated and can be fixed firmly to the body, do not hinder freedom of movement and are effective for about 24 hours. Moreover, all those affected are advised to continue moving despite the back pain! It would be wrong to “paralyze” the painful body region with a protective posture. This would only lead to a physical malposition, from which further muscle cramps and thus further pain would result. Exercise and targeted back gymnastics have therefore proven themselves as a home remedy for back pain. As a rule of thumb for movement in the case of back pain, the following applies: The back can be moved in a targeted manner despite pain. Only when the pain becomes stronger, unnecessary movement should be avoided!

Quick help

As a quick help for back pain, it is recommended to apply heat in a tub bath or heat shower. The tub bath causes a loosening of the muscles and thus leads to an immediate relief of pain. Due to its massage effect, the heat shower is somewhat more intensive. For this, the affected person sits on a suitable stool in the shower cabin and massages the painful region with the warm water jet. If a bath or shower is not practical, heat can alternatively be administered as a hot water bottle or via the red light lamp. The latter offers the advantage that the particularly long waves of its light can reach even deeper layers of muscle and tissue. Essential oils are also known as proven remedies for back pain. Ginger, pine or sandalwood oil, gently massaged in, bring quick relief. Acute pain in the lumbar region can also be relieved by lying on a step. For this purpose, the affected person is laid flat on his back and the lower legs are placed on a padded stool. The thighs and lower legs are positioned at an angle of 90 degrees to each other. This positioning immediately relieves the spine, the intervertebral spaces widen and the pain subsides.

Alternative remedies

Alternative remedies can also provide relief from back pain. This is known, for example, from preparations from herbal medicine. Here, among other things, tinctures from ash and quaking poplar or ointments with cayenne pepper extract are recommended. These also have a warming, circulation-promoting, relaxing and anti-inflammatory effect on the locally treated muscles. If the entire musculature of the body is to be relaxed – for example, because there is a general, stress-related cramping – then drinking valerian tea can help. The same applies to Schuessler salts and homeopathic remedies. Among the Schuessler salts, Ferrum phosphoricum D6 is particularly effective for acute back pain. Calcium floratum D6, on the other hand, is recommended for long-lasting complaints. The following applies to both preparations: The tablets are dissolved in hot water. The resulting solution is drunk slowly and in sips. Among the homeopathic remedies, Aconitum C30, Arnica D12 or Nux vomica C30 are known as back pain preparations. In addition, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) or Ayurveda can also be used to treat back pain. In TCM, acupuncture and herbal treatments are the basis of the therapy. Ayurveda brings pain relief with oil casts and massages.
