Home remedy for the treatment of carbuncle

Basically, carbuncles are serious infections of hairy skin that require medical treatment. To alleviate the symptoms, a warm black tea bag can be applied. This has an antibacterial and calming effect. To empty the pus, there are home remedies.

For the pus to empty, the carbuncle must mature. To promote the maturation, you can try damp heat, a visit to the sauna, warm milk or a damp-warm washcloth can cause the carbuncle to empty itself. Camomile tea or thyme tea can also be used as they have an antibacterial effect.

For this, one gives a washcloth or a towel in hot chamomile or thyme tea and puts it on the carbuncle. Hot salt water is also popular, which also has a disinfecting effect. We strongly advise against bursting a carbuncle yourself. The infection is caused by stubborn bacteria and should be observed and treated by a doctor. In order to avoid that the purulent inflammation merely migrates and returns, a small surgical intervention with subsequent antibiotic therapy is usually necessary.

Formation and dangers of carbuncle

In principle, a carbuncle can occur wherever there is hair on the body. However, carbuncles are more frequent in the facial area or on the buttocks. Since many small hairs grow especially in the face, this can also lead to the development of furuncles (inflammation of a single hair follicle) and the development of carbuncles.

The cause of the inflammation is often an infection with bacteria. Especially frequent is an infection with the pathogen Staphylococcus aureus. This is a germ which, like some other bacteria, is normally always on the skin, i.e. it belongs to the normal skin flora and only leads to an inflammation under certain circumstances.

A carbuncle of the nose can occur due to a weakened immune system, bad hygiene or also due to a changed hormone situation, as it occurs for example during puberty. Carbuncles of the nose are particularly dangerous in contrast to carbuncles on the back or neck, because the distance to the brain is very small. The bacteria can spread quickly via the blood and lymph vessels and reach the brain, where they can also lead to infection and inflammation.

Especially the meninges, which surround the brain like a coat, can be affected. An inflammation of the meninges is medically also called meningitis. Therefore it is particularly important to leave carbuncles of the nose, but also carbuncles of the lips, alone and not to empty the pus that develops independently.

Even if carbuncles of the nose are particularly conspicuous and can also be very painful, since a great many sensitive nerve fibers run in this area, one should nevertheless not express them, but rather go to a doctor early. In contrast to furuncles, carbuncles can usually only be removed surgically, as pulling ointments or other creams are often no longer sufficient. Therefore, it is advisable to see a dermatologist at an early stage to prevent the inflammation from spreading to neighboring hair follicles, so that the inflamed area does not become too large.
