Home remedy for toothache

Introduction

Home remedies for toothache can briefly relieve the pain, but they are not an alternative to treatment alone, because they do not treat the cause. Patients who suffer from severe toothache and do not have the opportunity to visit a dentist’s office promptly, can get relief in the meantime with simple home remedies. These include:

  • Clove oil.
  • Onion (cut into slices and wrapped in a cloth) held against the outside of the cheek
  • Savoy cabbage leaves can also be held to the painful area from the outside and help to alleviate it.
  • Rinsing with cooled chamomile or sage tea Another remedy is rinsing with sea salt diluted in water (1/2 teaspoon) for two minutes, which must then be spat out again.
  • Cooling
  • Wheat Grass
  • Healing earth

Limited effect of home remedies

Basically, one should not only hope for household remedies. Depending upon which the cause for the tooth pain is, also with the vegetable means or Hom?opathie no improvement is to be expected. A good remedy is the distraction.

By chewing or eating something tasty, attention is distracted from the pain. Chewing also helps to drown out passive toothache with active pain. The pain you inflict on yourself is felt less painful than a foreign pain.

Therefore, spices such as rosemary, cloves or chamomile are recommended to counteract the pain. Also because of their smell they have a calming effect and relieve the pain. The use of salt water solutions for temporary treatment of toothache is particularly attractive because salt is available in almost every household.

The affected patient should put as much salt as possible into a glass of warm water. The heat causes the salt crystals to dissolve and a cloudy liquid is formed. For this reason, the salt cannot cause any damage to the tooth substance.

Afterwards the oral cavity can be rinsed with the prepared solution for a few minutes. Depending on the cause of the toothache, an analgesic effect will appear after a short time. However, the water should be spat out and not drunk.

This is not recommended for children because of the danger of swallowing the salt water. Another popular household remedy against acute toothache is commercial tea. Especially black and green tea are excellent for alleviating the symptoms.

In addition, special herbal mixtures against toothache can be prepared in pharmacies and purchased as household remedies. Herbal mixtures of sage, chamomile and peppermint are particularly recommended in this context. Both the tea and the herbal mixture must be dissolved in about half a glass of warm tap water before use.

Afterwards the oral cavity can be rinsed until the toothache subsides. By using tea and/or herbal mixtures, especially inflammatory toothache can be relieved quickly and effectively. The reason for this is the calming properties of the substances used.

In most families the onion is more commonly known as a home remedy for treating earaches. But also acutely occurring toothaches can be effectively relieved with the help of this household remedy. Due to the intensive essential oils, the onion and especially its juice has proven itself as a household remedy and is also said to help with toothache.

The onion has an anti-inflammatory effect and the substances it contains have a decongesting effect on thickened tissue. If the gums around the affected tooth are reddened and swollen, the onion helps the inflammation to subside. To do this, either soak an envelope in onion juice and place it on the affected area or chew on chopped onion pieces.

The reason for the pain-relieving properties of onions is their antibacterial properties. The patient suffering from toothache should put small pieces of raw onions in his mouth and chew them well. In this way a large amount of the active ingredient is released.

Alternatively, the onion can be warmed and placed on the aching tooth. The effectiveness of this home remedy is little affected by using the alternative method. Wheat grass has long been considered to have a healthy and positive effect on the human organism.

It has a high protein content and one of its many positive effects is, among others, the strengthening of the immune system. In case of toothache, a small amount of it should be taken into the mouth and applied to the affected area. It inhibits the inflammation and restricts the growth of bacteria. In this way, the juice of the wheatgrass reaches the affected area.

The effectiveness of this household remedy is based primarily on its bacteriostatic (inhibiting bacterial growth) and anti-inflammatory (anti-inflammatory) properties. Apart from its use in acute toothache, wheatgrass home remedy can also be used to treat gum disease. Cloves are probably one of the oldest household remedies that can be used to relieve toothache.

According to tradition, cloves were already used in ancient times. Nowadays, clove oil is found as an essential component of many dental care products. The effectiveness of the clove juice is mainly based on a substance known as “Eugenol”.

This substance has an anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect. The use of cloves as a household remedy against toothache is also quite simple. The patient can either take a whole clove in the mouth and chew it in the area of the aching tooth or dissolve some clove juice in tap water and then rinse the oral cavity vigorously.

However, this household remedy works best if the aching tooth is dabbed with a little oil of cloves. When using cloves or clove oil in the treatment of toothache, however, it should be noted that nervous toothache can even increase under the treatment. This phenomenon is based on the fact that the juice of the clove is very pungent.

Exposed nerve fibers, which are damaged anyway, are irritated by this juice in such a way that pain can increase. In addition to the clove oil mentioned further above, tea tree oil can also be brought to the affected area with the help of a cotton swab. Also rinsing the mouth with a little diluted tea tree oil is an often used method.

Oil extraction has been a proven method for ages. Clove oil in particular has an antiseptic and antimicrobial effect. It therefore fights pathogens such as fungi, bacteria and viruses.

Thus it relieves tongue coating and bad breath. Indirectly it prevents inflammation and caries. Clove oil gets its properties from a specific ingredient, eugenol.

Eugenol has an analgesic and anaesthetic effect, as well as a disinfectant. Since the cause of toothache is usually bacteria or viruses, the oil kills them. Toothache that comes from inflammation of the gums is also combated with Eugenol.

Eugenol reduces the production of hormones that are responsible for gum inflammation. Pain transmission is slightly inhibited because Eugenol has an effect on the calcium balance. By shifting the calcium levels, the transmission of pain is influenced.

Clove oil is well tolerated by the oral mucosa, so it can be applied pure to the affected and painful areas. In addition, one can also easily chew a clove with the painful tooth. By squeezing the clove oil is squeezed out of the spice in small portions.

Clove oil should not be used during pregnancy, as it contains substances that cause contractions and could endanger both mother and child. In order to use the oil extraction technique, one should have high-quality, cold-pressed sunflower or sesame oil at hand. To develop the antibacterial effect, leave about one tablespoon of it in your mouth for a few minutes.

However, it should not be swallowed after use, so that the bacteria do not remain in the body. You can spit it into a tissue. This method is also good as a preventive measure to rid the mouth of bacteria.

Healing clay is suitable as a household remedy, especially for treating superficial wounds. In the meantime, however, it has been found that toothache can also be relieved by using this household remedy. In this context, a small amount of healing clay should be applied to the painful area.

Afterwards the patient must let the household remedy work over a period of several minutes. To relieve the toothache, the application should be repeated several times a day and/or combined with other home remedies. Savoy cabbage leaves are another remedy for toothache.

With these, the midrib must be removed beforehand and then rolled flat with a cake roll. Then wrap the savoy cabbage in a cloth and hold it against the aching cheek. Alternatively, you can also process onions in this way and wrap them in a cloth.

With onions it is also possible to chew a slice of them in the mouth. Onions have an antibacterial property, which can relieve the toothache. Typically, they are also used for earaches.Rinsing with alcohol, like vodka, kills bacteria, but this method is less suitable.

The alcohol attacks the gums and can damage them. Antibacterial solutions containing chlorhexidine are more suitable. A household remedy that may seem unusual at first glance, but is easy to use, are so-called acupressure points that can be stimulated.

Such a point is located on the side of the fingernail on the index finger on the outer right side. This area can be pressed with the thumb. Another pain point is located in front of the earlobes.

On the outer ankle is another such point which can be massaged with the index finger and thumb. Between nose and upper lip is another such point, which can be pressed for 2-4 minutes. If one listens to the advice of stone medicine, there is amber and the so-called blue calcite, which are supposed to act as painkilling stones. They should be held to the affected area. The latter stone is also said to have a positive effect on bone growth.
