Homeopathy | Abdominal pain – what to do?

Homeopathy

As potentially dangerous diseases can be responsible for abdominal pain, it is advisable to consult a doctor, especially in the case of severe or long-lasting complaints and when accompanying symptoms such as bloody diarrhoea, severe vomiting, yellowing of the skin and high fever occur, before starting your own therapy with homeopathic or other medicines. Many people with abdominal pain prefer a naturopathic therapy. Homeopathic medicines are one of the possible alternatives for such people.

The choice of the right homeopathic remedy depends on the type of complaints. For cramp-like pain and flatulence, homeopathic remedies containing chamomile can help, while homeopathic remedies containing belladonna are said to be helpful for sudden colic and menstrual problems. If the abdominal pain is caused by constipation or heartburn, homeopathic remedies containing nux vomica are recommended. In case of food intolerances and after ingestion of spoiled food Okoubaka can be used.

How can abdominal pain be treated herbal?

As with conventional medical treatment of abdominal pain, herbal treatment is also dependent on the cause and type of the complaints. In the case of abdominal pain in the context of an irritable bowel, various medicines can alleviate the symptoms. Combined preparations such as Iberogast®, essential oils of peppermint, fennel, caraway and lemon balm, spicy foods made from galant or ginger root and mustard oil are among the most commonly used medicines.

If mild abdominal pain is accompanied by loss of appetite and nausea, remedies containing herbal bitter substances, for example from gentian root, dandelion or yarrow herb, can stimulate digestion and alleviate the symptoms. For stomach aches caused by excessive stomach acid, plants with mucilages occasionally help. These include marshmallow root, Icelandic moss and linseed. If there is a mild infection or inflammation, chamomile can be used as a tea to alleviate symptoms. It should be noted that especially in the case of severe or long-lasting abdominal pain as well as the occurrence of accompanying symptoms, serious illnesses should be ruled out by a general practitioner or specialist before self-therapy with herbal medicines.

salts for stomach ache

Schuessler salts are various preparations selected by the homeopathic doctor Schuessler, which contain mineral salts in very low, homeopathic doses. Schuessler distinguished the salts due to a different mode of action according to him from homeopathy. According to advocates, they can be used for almost all illnesses, including abdominal pain of various causes. However, no effect of the Schuessler salts can be determined by conventional medicine. Also abdominal pains are not demonstrably influenced.

What to do in case of colicky abdominal pain?

What to do in the case of colicky abdominal pain depends greatly on how severe the symptoms are and in what context they occur. In the case of severe colic and accompanying symptoms such as flank pain, bloody diarrhoea, severe vomiting, yellowing of the skin and high fever, a doctor should be consulted immediately to clarify the cause. The risk of having a disease requiring treatment, such as kidney stones, gallstones, a vascular occlusion in the intestine or an intestinal tumour, increases significantly with such symptoms.

Mild to moderate, colicky abdominal pain often has harmless causes such as flatulence, menstruation, a gastrointestinal infection or an irritable bowel. For many forms of abdominal cramps, the drug butylscopalamine, also known as Buscopan®, can be used. It relieves colicky symptoms, especially those of intestinal and kidney diseases.

In most cases of colicky abdominal pain, an additional painkiller such as ibuprofen, diclofenac or metamizole can be taken. For mild symptoms, household remedies such as heat pads, rest and relaxing and antispasmodic teas can also help to alleviate the symptoms. See above under home remedies.
