Hepatitis B therapy is covered by social security and thus by the patient’s health insurance. It should be noted that some services, such as prescriptions for medication or hospital stays, are subject to cost sharing, which the patient has to pay as a co-payment. Prophylaxis of hepatitis B

The active hepatitis B vaccine is usually administered as a combination vaccine together with the hepatitis A vaccine. The body forms specific antibodies against this artificially replicated component of the virus envelope, the HBs antigen. The vaccination is administered a total of three times (the second after 1 month and the last after half a year after the first vaccination).

After about 10 years, the immunization must be refreshed. In children and adolescents, the vaccination is recommended by the STIKO (Standing Vaccination Commission) and is included in the vaccination calendar. Especially persons in: In case of infection during birth, the child can be given a combination of hepatitis B hyperimmunoglobulin (passive vaccination) and hepatitis B vaccine within 12 hours.

The vaccination is injected into the muscle (intramuscularly, i. m.) and is well tolerated. Severe intolerances are observed only very rarely. In case of HBV exposure (e.g.

: A passive vaccination is possible in the case of HBV exposure (e.g. needle-stick injury (potential contact with hepatitis B), in which immunoglobulins (antibodies) are administered. This vaccination is carried out less frequently because it is less safe. The effect of passive immunization lasts only a few weeks.
