Household remedy against dry lips

Especially in winter many people have to fight with dry lips. These are not only perceived as unattractive, but can also be very unpleasant to painful. Especially cold and dry heating air in winter, but also strong sunlight can cause dry lips and dry skin in general.

The lips are particularly susceptible to this, as they have only a very thin epithelium and also do not have subcutaneous fatty tissue. Lip care sticks are then usually the first choice for treating dry lips. However, their effect often does not seem to be sufficient. A whole range of household remedies are available as alternatives.

Vitamin preparations

It is still sometimes claimed that vitamin deficiency, especially a deficiency and vitamin A and the B vitamins, leads to dry skin in general. However, a vitamin deficiency is very rare in our society due to our comparatively balanced diet and therefore very unlikely to be the cause of dry lips. An exception is vitamin D, which cannot be sufficiently produced by the skin, especially in the cold months. However, using the sun as often as possible is a better solution than buying expensive vitamin preparations.

Lip care pencils

The widespread rumor that the use of cheap lip care sticks would dry out the lips instead of protecting them or even make them “dependent” in the long run has not been proven. It is certain, however, that high-quality care products from the pharmacy often have a better effect. These contain fewer unnecessary additives and usually also no mineral oils.

Mineral oils are obtained by the distillation of crude oil and replace higher quality fats and oils in many care products. They are often said to have a drying effect. In contrast, lip care sticks made of natural waxes or jojoba oil are recommended. Jojoba oil also has a weak sun protection factor.

Licking lips

Moistening the lips with saliva often brings short-term relief. In the long run, however, this tends to dry out the lips and should be avoided.
