How can a hip luxation after a TEP be avoided?

Even though hip luxation cannot always be avoided with a TEP, the patient should observe a few rules and take measures to reduce the risk. The most important thing is to perform movements in the operated hip in a controlled manner and at rest. A hip dislocation of the prosthesis is often caused by abrupt movements, which must be avoided.

Especially by slowly getting up and sitting down, a dislocation in an artificial hip joint can be avoided. In the first weeks after the operation it is better to walk and lie down than to sit and stand. To avoid hip dislocation, certain movements in which the hip is bent and the leg is rotated at the same time should also be performed only to a small extent, e.g. bending the hip joint by more than 90° is not recommended. To make this easier to achieve in everyday life, there are appropriate cushions in wedge form which are inserted in such a way that the leg is not brought into unwanted positions.

For longer walking distances, a crutch can help to prevent hip luxation in an artificial hip joint. In addition to these measures, good physiotherapy with targeted muscle building is another important pillar. A well developed hip musculature can additionally stabilize the joint and thus reduce the risk of a hip luxation after TEP.
