How can an inflammation be recognized by the navel piercing?

If an inflammation of the navel piercing occurs, this is often recognized by the classic signs of inflammation: pain, redness, warming, swelling and possible pus formation. This means that the skin around the navel piercing can look reddened. Possibly the skin area is warmed, and perhaps even thickened and hardened.

In case of an inflammation there is often a pain, either only by pressure on the piercing area or also by touching it. In case of a longer existing, untreated inflammation of the bellybutton piercing it often comes to pain already at rest. If the inflammation spreads, it can come to a pus formation.

Itching in the navel area can also occur. If left untreated, this can develop into an abscess, i.e. an accumulation of pus in an encapsulated tissue space. If the inflammation is not treated, it can cause the inflammation to spread to the blood. Fever often occurs. To avoid this, the inflammation should be treated locally at the navel piercing as early as possible.

How is an inflammation of the navel piercing treated?

In order to prevent the inflammation from spreading to the navel, the inflammation should be treated as early as possible. If there is a slight inflammation around the piercing area, you can treat the inflammation yourself at first. This includes a regular, careful cleaning and disinfection of the navel piercing.

If the tissue around the piercing swells strongly, it can be useful to have a disinfected, longer piercing inserted. This helps to reduce the bruising and tension of the inflamed skin. If the inflammation is more pronounced and pus or blood comes out, a doctor should be consulted.

In this case it is often helpful to take an antibiotic ointment or antibiotic tablets. The inflammation at the navel piercing in pregnancy corresponds to the therapy of an inflammation at the navel piercing. That means that the piercing should be cleaned and disinfected in case of a slight inflammation. If the inflammation is worse, a doctor should examine the navel and a corresponding therapy should be discussed, which is compatible with the pregnancy. Especially during pregnancy it is important to adjust the piercing length to the belly circumference and if necessary to insert a longer piercing.

Navel piercing itches – What could be behind it?

An itching in the area of the navel piercing can have different causes. Often an inflammation is the reason for the itching. Mostly the skin is also reddened, possibly also warmed and painful.

Depending on the material of the navel piercing, an allergy can also be responsible for the itching. It is possible to be allergic to the metal of the jewellery. In this case a general practitioner or better a dermatologist should have a look at the navel.

Another possibility for itching at the navel piercing is the wrong piercing length. There are belly button piercings with 8, 10 and 12 millimetre length. If the piercing is too long, it can be mechanically stressed and chafed by movement and clothing.

This can itch and become red at first and in the worst case even ignite. Therefore you should choose a suitable piercing length and get a thorough consultation in the piercing studio. Similarly mechanically wrong clothing can also lead to an itchy piercing. If you wear waisted, so called “high wait” trousers and back you put a lot of pressure on the piercing. Therefore corresponding garments as well as upper parts of net should be avoided especially with a freshly pierced piercing.
