How can you prevent diarrhoea after beer?

Since beer diarrhea is mainly caused by drinking beer, one of the easiest ways to prevent it is to limit the consumption of beer. If, however, one wants to take preventive measures in case of an imminent consumption, it is recommended to avoid foods that are difficult to digest. These include, for example, particularly fatty dishes, very spicy or very strongly seasoned food.

Furthermore, the consumption of caffeine can also lead to diarrhea the next day. It not only stimulates the nerve cells and makes you awake, but also activates the intestinal cells, which can have an additional laxative effect. Therefore, one should avoid the combination of alcohol and caffeinated energy drinks.

However, there are also foods that can counteract the development of diarrhea. These include bananas, raw apples or carrots and swelling foods such as oat or rice porridge. If the diarrhoea has already occurred and manifests itself with cramp-like symptoms, a hot water bottle can have an analgesic and antispasmodic effect. It is then important to drink plenty of fluids to compensate for the loss of water in the stool. Herbal teas such as fennel, peppermint or chamomile tea are particularly suitable for this purpose.

Duration

Beer diarrhea is annoying, but in most cases it stops on its own after one or two days without further action. Drug therapy is not recommended for the time being. The gastrointestinal tract consists of a sensitive balance of the intestinal flora, which, once disturbed, needs a certain time to regenerate.

By eating easily digestible food, such as toast, rusks or salt sticks, the regeneration process can be positively influenced. However, if the symptoms persist for more than three days or if bloody diarrhoea develops, a doctor should be consulted for a more detailed clarification.
