How can you train your long-term memory?

There are many different methods that can help to improve and train long-term memory. For this it is very important that the information to be learned is linked to emotions or other memorable associations or characteristics. This means that most things, such as vocabulary or traffic signs, are better remembered when they are linked to a thought.

This can include, for example, an emotion, such as special joy over a funny word or fear over a misinterpreted traffic sign. Information to be learned can also be visualized, i.e. linked to an image in front of the inner eye. As a result, the memory is often better able to reproduce the information by calling up the image.

Another important component for improving long-term memory is the fact that the information to be memorized often needs to be repeated and practiced. There is no way around this, as this is the only way to effectively establish and strengthen connections between the nerve cells in the brain. The regular repetition of information can sometimes signal to the brain, so to speak, that it is important enough for long-term memory.

What are the causes of poor long-term memory?

Poor long-term memory can have many causes.It does not have to be the same as dementia or Alzheimer’s, as is often thought. Often harmless influences are to blame for a temporary disturbance of the long-term memory. After removal of this, the retentiveness of the long-term memory usually returns completely.

Temporary poorer long-term memory can be caused by a lack of sleep for a longer period of time or a permanently increased stress level. Other psychological stress, such as the sudden death of a relative, can also temporarily impair long-term memory. In the same way, something positive, such as fresh love, can also lead to a reduction in the performance of long-term memory.

If the poor long-term memory persists over a longer period of time, a doctor should be consulted to clarify the cause. In such cases other triggers are usually possible. Long excessive consumption of alcohol and drugs can cause poor long-term memory. Dementia is also a possible cause. Alzheimer’s disease, a certain form of dementia, can also have a long-term negative effect on long-term memory.
