How dangerous are red spots on the palate?

Red spots on the palate can have many different causes. Mostly they are accompanied by other symptoms, which then give hints about the disease.Often it concerns only a harmless allergy or intolerance, then usually additionally symptoms in the gastro-intestinal tract accompany. If the spots occur in combination with fever, it is usually an infection.

If the spots and symptoms persist over a longer period of time, a doctor should be consulted for clarification in order to rule out a more dangerous disease. In order to be able to make the correct diagnosis, it is especially important to pay attention to the accompanying symptoms, which are associated with the red spots on the palate. To this end, it is important that the patient informs the doctor during the anamnesis, i.e. the doctor-patient consultation, of all symptoms and also explains the temporal connection, if there is one.

If a patient reports red spots on the palate and, in addition, possibly loud intestinal noises or increased air in the abdomen, it is possible that the red spots are directly related to food intolerance or an allergy. If there are red spots on the palate and a tingling tongue, this often indicates an allergy, for example to tropical fruits or pineapple. In order to make the right diagnosis, the doctor can first carry out an allergy test and then various tests against intolerances, such as lactose intolerance.

However, if a patient reports additional fever and malaise and also has a foul taste in the mouth, the doctor must examine (inspect) the patient’s palate and throat. In most cases, the inspection is sufficient to make a correct diagnosis. However, if the doctor is unsure which bacterium is causing the infection, he can also take a smear of the throat and then have it examined in microbiology. However, this is only necessary in rare cases, as the clinical picture is usually sufficient to make a diagnosis.
