How dangerous can whistling glandular fever become?

In most cases of whistling glandular fever in babies, the course is mild or asymptomatic. At the beginning of life, maternal antibodies still in the blood help the child. In severe clinical courses, however, some dangerous complications may occur.

It is important for the child to take physical rest in case of a severe infection. The spleen may swell and in the worst case rupture. It can also lead to kidney failure, meningoencephalitis or inflammation of the heart. In order to prevent this, the baby in poor general condition should be clinically monitored, bed rest should be maintained, enough fluids should be given and no antibiotics should be taken.
