How is inflammation of the vocal cords different from inflammation of the larynx?
The vocal chords are part of the vocal folds in the larynx. Overuse of the voice or infections can lead to inflammation of the vocal chords. If the pathogens spread to the entire mucous membrane of the larynx when the vocal chords are infected, this is known as laryngitis.
In this case, hoarseness and coughing become worse and sore throat or difficulty swallowing additionally occur. In rare cases, laryngitis causes breathing difficulties and even shortness of breath. In most cases, both vocal cord and larynx inflammation are harmless and do not require medication. If there is an infection with bacteria, the doctor will prescribe an antibiotic.
