The liver biopsy itself, i.e. the removal of the tissue cylinder itself, takes only a few seconds. With preparation and follow-up, however, you should allow about 30 minutes for a liver biopsy.

What does a liver biopsy cost?

A liver biopsy is paid for by the health insurance company for persons with statutory health insurance in the case of an indication by a doctor. A physician will not perform a liver biopsy without a justifying indication. If the liver biopsy is invoiced according to the German scale of fees for physicians (GOÄ), as is the case with privately insured persons, for example, it is invoiced at the simple rate of 14.57 euros. Billing according to the 2 to 3-fold rate is also possible. The costs for the material used and the fine tissue examination are added to this.

Are there alternatives?

Only a liver biopsy can provide a reliable diagnosis, as a tissue sample is available. There are alternative procedures for obtaining a tissue sample. Using ultrasound, MRI (see: MRI of the liver) or CT, indications of an underlying disease can be provided.

How long are you on sick leave after a liver biopsy?

How long you will be on sick leave depends on your professional activity and the course after the surgery. Intensive physical activities should be avoided for at least one week. In the case of more severe pain or complications, a sick leave can be extended. As a rule, the patient is put on sick leave 3-5 days after a liver biopsy if the course of the disease is uneventful.

Can a liver biopsy be performed on an outpatient basis?

A liver biopsy is usually not performed on an outpatient basis. It is important to monitor the patient 24 hours after a liver biopsy, to regularly check the pulse and blood pressure and to recheck the blood values. In addition, patients should be kept in bed for 6-8 hours and the puncture site should be compressed by lying on the right side on a sandbag to reduce the risk of secondary bleeding.
