How long does the entire disease last?
In the case of pneumonia, one must roughly reckon with a duration of two to three weeks. Of course, there are factors and circumstances which influence the duration positively or negatively. These include, for example, the environment in which the person affected has contracted the pneumonia.
For example, the germs differ depending on whether one contracts the pneumonia in hospital or at home. Furthermore, the choice of the right antibiotic is important in order to get the disease under control as quickly as possible. If this is successful right from the start, the pneumonia can be treated much more effectively and thus more quickly.
The last decisive factor is also the general condition of the patient. A person who has already been ill or weakened in any case usually has to fight pneumonia for a longer time. The typical symptoms of pneumonia vary in length and depend not least on whether the pneumonia is treated with an antibiotic or not.
In addition to the fever, the increased pulse rate usually also decreases after the end of the first week of illness.If there is an inflammation of the pleura in addition to the lung, the pain when breathing as well as the change in color of the sputum will persist for several days longer than the fever or the increased pulse rate. The accompanying feeling of weakness and exhaustion can persist for several weeks after the end of the actual disease. Atypical pneumonia usually lasts longer than typical pneumonia, which may be due both to the fact that the pneumonia is not recognized as such so quickly and to the fact that it takes time to find the appropriate therapy for this form of pneumonia. Since the pathogen spectrum of an atypical form is clearly defined, other antibiotics are needed here; in some cases even other drugs if the pneumonia is caused by fungi or even parasites, for example.
