How long must the antibiotic be taken? | Antibiotic for inflammation of the tooth root

How long must the antibiotic be taken?

In any case, the antibiotic should be taken as long as the dentist prescribes it. Since the dentist only uses this medication in severe cases, the medication must never be discontinued on its own! The length of time the antibiotic is taken depends on both the medication itself and the degree of inflammation.

With amoxicillin the average duration of use is between three and seven days. Even if the pain improves before the planned end of the treatment, the antibiotic must still be taken. The probability that the inflammation will flare up again even more strongly is simply too high.

When does the antibiotic start working?

It is only possible to say approximately how fast an antibiotic works, since each person has its own metabolism and each antibiotic works differently. The drug can only really take effect when it has reached the site of action in a sufficiently high concentration. Only there it can do something. As a rule, noticeable success begins about two days after the first intake.

Taking antibiotics during pregnancy

If possible, antibiotics should be avoided completely during pregnancy. It is however in principle possible to take an antibiotic even then. Because without a healthy mother no healthy child can come to the world.

There are however some characteristics, which are to be considered. The dentist should examine completely exactly whether in the present case an antibiotic is really necessary or whether the inflammation heals also without. All pros and cons must be weighed strictly against each other!

If absolutely necessary, during pregnancy special medication that does not harm the foetus must be used. This group includes drugs such as: Ampicillin or cephalosporin. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist for a prescription again so that the unborn child is not harmed!

When does the pain improve after taking antibiotics?

The pain usually improves after a short time. However, by no means, as is usual with painkillers, directly after taking them. It usually takes about 1.5-2 days until the number of bacteria is reduced so much that the pain is less. However, complete freedom from pain can only be expected after the wound has healed.
