How much is the hemostatic cotton wool?

Hemostatic cotton wool is offered by several representatives over the counter in pharmacies. A jar of 2g cotton wool costs about 9 Euro.

What alternative aids can be used to stop bleeding?

There are numerous alternatives for the hemostatic cotton wool. For light bleeding and superficial wounds, a simple plaster is often sufficient. If necessary, a sterile compress can also be used.

In the case of nosebleeds, it is often sufficient to sit upright, tilt the head forward and squeeze the front wings of the nose with thumb and index fingers for a few minutes. Additionally, cold in the neck or sucking ice cubes can help. If the bleeding cannot be stopped in this way, a doctor can, for example, use a nasal tamponade or cauterise the bleeding vessel.

However, these measures are usually not necessary. It is important to note that the head must not be placed in the neck during a nosebleed, otherwise the blood can get into the throat and lead to vomiting or even suffocation!
