How often should one have prophylaxis?

The interval of prophylaxis should be determined at best with your dentist, as it varies individually. Factors that play a role include the risk of periodontitis and the periodontal status of the patient. A person with healthy gums is recommended one treatment per year. However, if the risk of periodontitis is increased, teeth should be cleaned more often. In this case an interval of three months may be optimal.

Laser therapy

A new method of periodontitis prophylaxis is laser therapy. Here a laser is used to disinfect the gum pockets and kill the bacteria living there. Whether this method is better than manual cleaning cannot yet be said, as there are not enough studies available. Since laser therapy does not remove the plaque in the gum pockets, the laser is more suitable as a supplement to conventional cleaning.
