How to distinguish implantation bleeding from period?

Often, implantation bleeding can easily be confused with premature menstrual bleeding. However, there are some characteristics that may indicate implantation bleeding. An important characteristic is the color of the bleeding.

An implantation bleeding is usually light red at the beginning, whereas period bleedings usually have a rather darker color. Period bleeding can be a little lighter at the beginning, but the color changes during the course of the period and tends to become dark red and brownish. Furthermore, the strength of the bleeding is a good indication to distinguish an implantation bleeding from a period bleeding.

The implantation bleeding is usually of a very weak intensity, whereas the period bleeding is usually a stronger bleeding. Of course, there are always exceptions. For example, the intensity of a period bleeding can also be very light.

This is often the case when taking the pill. The implantation bleeding often consists only of a droplet-like spotting, which is over after 24 hours, but at the latest after 5 days. Period bleeding, on the other hand, lasts about 3 to 7 days.

Period bleeding is also often accompanied by accompanying symptoms such as abdominal pain, breast tenderness, headaches and nausea. Furthermore, the period of implantation bleeding is different from the period of menstrual bleeding. Embedding bleeding usually occurs about 6 days after ovulation, whereas menstrual bleeding occurs about 14 days after ovulation. However, this can of course also be different due to cycle fluctuations, for example due to stress or illness. In case of doubt, a pregnancy test should be carried out if pregnancy is suspected.

When is the pregnancy test positive after an implantation bleeding?

There are two types of pregnancy tests. There is the urine rapid test, which can usually be purchased in pharmacies and performed at home, and the serum test, which is performed by a doctor with the help of a blood sample. Rapid urine tests are positive approximately 14 days after fertilization. Assuming that implantation bleeding occurs about 6 to 8 days after fertilization, this means that the test is positive about 6 to 8 days after implantation bleeding. The serum test is much more accurate and can be positive as early as 6 to 9 days after fertilization. Thus, the serum test can show a positive result already at the beginning of the implantation bleeding.
