Human Immunoglobulin

Products

Human immunoglobulin is available as a solution for injection from various suppliers in many countries.

Structure and properties

Human immunoglobulin is a sterile, liquid or freeze-dried preparation of immunoglobulins containing predominantly immunoglobulin G (IgG). Other proteins may be present. The preparation is obtained from plasma of at least 1000 healthy donors and contains the IgG antibody spectrum present in the normal population.

Effects

Human immunoglobulin (ATC J06BA) replaces the missing antibodies and is effective against various infectious agents. It confers transient passive immunity and has additional immunomodulatory properties.

Indications

Immunoglobulin is used for substitution therapy in primary and secondary immunodeficiencies and autoimmune diseases, among other indications. Other indications for use exist.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. A distinction is made between drugs that are administered subcutaneously/intramuscularly and those that can be injected intravenously. Intramuscular administration is less common today.

Contraindications

Human immunoglobulin is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity. For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Interactions

Interactions are possible with live vaccines. Certain blood tests may be adulterated by the drugs.

Adverse effects

The most common possible adverse effects include reactions at the injection site, headache, nausea, fever, and fatigue. Allergic reactions may occur.
