Hyperacidity (Acidosis): Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

People are said to have hyperacidity or acidosis when the pH of the blood is below the level of at least 7.36. Healthy people have a balanced acid-base ratio between 7.36 and 7.44. Acidosis is divided into metabolism-based (metabolic) and respiration-based (respiratory) acidosis. Typical signs are blue lips and frequent urination.

What is hyperacidity (acidosis)?

Hyperacidity or latent acidosis – the insidious enemy. Nearly 90 percent of the population is more or less overacidified, according to medical experts who study and research the subject of overacidification.According to this study, every chronic disease has to do with overacidification of the connective tissue. There is a certain yardstick for the degree of overacidification: If a normal cell has a pH value of 7.4, this value drops below 7.0, for example, as a result of direct electrical radiation. Tumor cells, such as those that every human being develops every day without becoming ill, acquire a radiation-acid mantle, so that the body’s own defense cells are brought to a standstill. Accordingly, we speak of hyperacidity when the pH value of a cell drops significantly below 7.4. (Note: the lower the pH, the more acidic the cells are; the higher the pH, the more alkaline the cells are).

Causes

According to experts, the reasons for general hyperacidity are obvious, because acid is practically everywhere: industrial emissions, industrially prepared food with quite a few additives, radiation from electrical appliances, stress, depression, chemical treatments in the form of medications, etc., provide a real “acid flood”. Smoking and other forms of addiction can also lead to hyperacidity. But also the increased consumption of too much sausage, meat and cheese causes the body to quickly become over-acidic. This acid flood must in turn be buffered, i.e. balanced, by bases in the body. The body has developed natural functions to eliminate acid: In first place is the liver, then the kidney, the lungs to excrete Co² again, the stomach and also the thigh bone is an excellent base donor. If the body no longer succeeds in buffering by bases, then it becomes acidic and diseases are the result.

Symptoms, complaints and signs

The acidosis of the organism is gradual, that is, usually not from one day to the next. The symptoms of acidosis of the intercellular tissues and organs are often very diverse and cannot be assigned to a clear disease process. This is especially true in the early phase of acidosis. Those affected therefore tend to express unclear symptoms, complaints and signs that cannot be clearly assigned to a specific clinical picture. Adiposity, i.e. overweight, must also be regarded today as an alarm signal with regard to a developing hyperacidity of the body. If the body is overacidified, this often manifests itself in a previously unknown daytime tiredness, sleepiness, lack of energy and a flabby, inconsistent body feeling. Over time, other signs of possible hyperacidity appear. The skin appearance changes negatively, not only the facial skin appears sallow, increasingly pale and wrinkled. The cause is the increasingly poorer blood circulation in the skin in the case of hyperacidity. The immune system is also no longer as efficient in chronic acidosis. This manifests itself in an increased susceptibility to infections with constant colds, colds or allergy symptoms. In many cases, the dental status also deteriorates, even though the teeth are brushed daily. The cause is the too low pH value of the saliva in the oral cavity in case of overacidification. On this basis, however, harmful germs such as fungi, bacteria and viruses can multiply explosively.

Disease progression

The consequences and course of hyperacidity vary depending on the individual. The motto is: the cell in the body does not forget anything and hyperacidity inhibits the healing genetics. A typical hyperacidity disease is, for example, osteoporosis. Since the femur is an alkaline donor, it becomes porous and brittle with persistent hyperacidity. Acidosis experts emphasize that it is not the generally assumed calcium deficiency that is responsible for osteoporosis, because there is usually enough calcium in the body in osteoporosis. Red blood cells originally form the buffers for acid in the blood and pass through the capillaries one after the other in a healthy state. However, in the case of hyperacidity, these clump together and only plasma flows through the capillaries. The consequences are high blood pressure, heart attack or stroke. In the early stages, there is a drop in performance, fatigue due to respiratory problems. In the worst case, cancer can occur. A pH of 6.3 or less in the blood is extremely favorable for the formation of tumor cells.

Complications

A mild form of hyperacidity that also lasts only a short to medium term is not usually accompanied by serious complications. However, the more the body’s pH approaches the acidic range and the longer this condition persists, the more likely complications will present themselves. In moderately severe cases, the typical accompanying symptoms initially intensify. One of the most common symptoms, headache, can take on migraine-like features. Daytime fatigue, which is also typical, can be felt to such an extent that sufferers can no longer get through an eight-hour workday and have to take a sleep break in the afternoon. In addition, the lack of concentration can increase to such an extent that many tasks can no longer be performed. If the disorder occurs at a young age, it can jeopardize success at school or successful completion of a degree. In addition, coordination disorders can develop, which mean that the affected person is no longer allowed to operate machines or drive a car or bicycle by himself. The restrictions at work and the severely reduced mobility can cause serious psychological problems. In the case of severe hyperacidity that is not treated, far more serious consequences must also be expected. For example, high blood pressure can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Recent studies also make permanent hyperacidity responsible for osteoporosis.

When should you go to the doctor?

If there is a steady increase in a feeling of illness or general malaise, there is cause for concern. With hyperacidity, changes in general health occur over a long period of time. A visit to the doctor is necessary as soon as the person becomes aware of the process. Overweight, an inner weakness or a decrease in mental as well as physical performance are part of the symptom picture of the disease. Fatigue, rapid states of exhaustion and also daytime tiredness indicate a health disorder. A physician should be consulted so that the abnormalities and peculiarities can be discussed. Ultimately, only a medical test will lead to clarification of the cause. If an increase in susceptibility to infection or colds is noticed, this should be followed up. These are warning signals of the organism that should be controlled. Changes in behavior, a decrease in zest for life and a withdrawal from social as well as societal life indicate existing irregularities. In most cases, there is an organic explanation for this, which should be diagnosed. If an unhealthy lifestyle is led over a longer period of time, a check-up visit to a doctor is always advisable. From adulthood onwards, it is also advisable to take part in the preventive medical check-ups offered. The examinations enable early detection and can therefore reveal health problems in good time.

Treatment and therapy

One measure to prevent and cure hyperacidity (acidosis) is a balanced and healthy diet. Animal proteins play a major role in hyperacidity (meat, sausage, cheese). Therefore, it is necessary to reduce them. Meat, refined sugar, white flour, alcohol and bean coffee are particularly acidic. Rich in bases, on the other hand, are potatoes (in first place), vegetables, salad, fruit, unpeeled rice, soy products, raw milk, nuts, spices and herbal teas. Mental moments of stress, such as grief and persistent overwork, also increase the flood of acid in the body. To neutralize acid, so-called alkaline products are offered in stores in the form of powder for shakes or in the form of tablets. Taken regularly, they are supposed to help restore the acid-base balance. Physicians who deal with hyperacidity also administer infusions to alleviate the acid load. In doing so, many emphasize that healthy eating is not enough when someone is in an “acid hole.” Then infusions, alkaline products and a balanced diet are recommended. Nevertheless, it remains advisable to eat a healthy and varied diet.Meat and sausage should still be consumed once a week. A lot of exercise and sport also supports the acid regulation in the body.

What you can do yourself

Hyperacidity can be the cause of many diseases and ailments. You feel listless and tired, listless and take medication for relief. “Self-prescribed” or prescribed by a doctor for heartburn or other problems arising from hyperacidity. With a healthy diet, no harmful substances are produced and so no problems with acidosis should occur. Once it has been recognized that acidosis is present, eating habits should be reviewed. Acid-forming foods such as mainly meat, sausage, milk, coffee, sweet drinks or soft drinks can be the cause. In addition, there are flavor enhancers and sweeteners. Last but not least, it is also the problems of everyday life such as stress, worries, negative thoughts and anger that contribute to hyperacidity. Too many acids and waste products are stored in the connective tissue, in the joints or in the blood vessels. If a positive result has been determined by means of a test strip, the balance in the body can be restored by means of a change in diet. With a ratio of 80 : 20, more alkaline than acidic foods should be consumed, and alkaline minerals such as magnesium and calcium are helpful. With an alkaline nutrition program, the body can be cleansed and well-being restored within a few months. Reduction of everyday problems and a positive attitude towards life contribute to an increase in quality of life.
