Hyperglycemia: Test and Diagnosis

1st-order laboratory parameters-obligatory laboratory tests.

  • Glucose (blood sugar)

Laboratory parameters 2nd order – depending on the results of the history, physical examination and obligatory laboratory parameters – for differential diagnostic clarification.

  • HbA1c (long-term blood glucose value) if necessary fructosamine (in case of interference with the determination of HbA1c).
  • Oral glucose tolerance test (oGTT).
  • Insulin (fasting insulin)
  • C-peptide (part of proinsulin)
  • Small blood count
  • Inflammatory parameters – CRP (C-reactive protein) or ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate).
  • Urine status (rapid test for: pH, leukocytes, nitrite, protein, glucose, blood), sediment, if necessary urine culture (pathogen detection and resistogram, that is, testing of suitable antibiotics for sensitivity / resistance).
  • Renal parameters – urea, creatinine, if necessary cystatin C or creatinine clearance.
  • Pancreatic parameters – amylase, elastase (in serum and stool), lipase.
