I should take these medicines with me on the trip to Egypt

There are a number of medicines that can help with diarrhoea and are therefore often purchased by tourists before they travel to Egypt. Unfortunately, this is not always the best method of treatment, because the diarrhoea is stopped but the pathogens can also stay in the intestine.

  • These include in particular the peristaltic inhibitors, sometimes known as loperamide, which inhibit bowel activity.
  • It is advisable for vacationers to get an electrolyte solution (usually available in powder form) from the pharmacy in advance, which can then be taken as needed. It provides for the supply of lost mineral materials with diarrhea illnesses.
  • Probiotics or probiotic preparations can also be useful. These are living organisms, from lactobacilli or yeast fungi, which help to stabilize the balance of the gastrointestinal flora during or after a diarrhea illness.

These pathogens exist

Diarrhea can be caused by a variety of pathogens. These include certain types of bacteria, viruses and also so-called protozoa (parasitic unicellular organisms). Especially the bacterial pathogens play a major role in diarrhoea diseases in Egypt.

It is estimated that 80 % of diarrhoeal diseases are caused by bacteria. Find out more about this topic under: Causes of diarrhoea

  • These include the bacteria E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella and various Campylobacter species.
  • Likewise, viruses such as rota or adenoviruses can be the cause of diarrhoea.
  • In rare cases, parasites can cause diarrhoea. These include Giardia lambila and Entomoeba histolytica. Both genera usually show pronounced symptoms of diarrhea and, if left untreated, especially in immunocompromised individuals, can lead to secondary diseases or, in some cases, damage to various organ systems by spreading in the body.

This is how I recognize that it is contagious

When diarrhoea occurs in vacation countries such as Egypt, it is usually assumed that it is due to an infection with bacteria or viruses. However, the symptoms or diarrhoea do not allow any statement about the risk of infection. Diarrhoea diseases, regardless of the pathogen, show very similar symptoms. Those affected should therefore observe special hygiene regulations to protect their surroundings from infection. These include:

  • Washing and especially disinfecting the hands, before and after going to the toilet.
  • The spatial separation during the “acute phase of diarrhea”, for example by sleeping in separate rooms.
  • Preventing the preparation of food for other people
  • No shaking hands or close contact with other people.
