Ichtholan®

Introduction

Ichtholan® is an ointment that is used for inflammatory, purulent skin diseases. Since the ointment is applied exclusively to the skin, Ichtholan® is also known as a dermatological agent. Altogether there are two different forms of Ichtholan® ointment.

On the one hand there is the 10 or 20% Ichtholan® Ointment, which contains 10 or 20% of the active ingredient ammonium bituminosulfonate, respectively, and on the other hand there is the 50% Ichtholan® Ointment, which is more concentrated and can thus be used for more severe inflammatory skin diseases. Ichtholan® is pharmacy-only, which means that Ichtholan® can only be purchased in a pharmacy, but does not have to be prescribed by a doctor. Nevertheless, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist (dermatologist) first to find out whether Ichtholan® is the appropriate ointment for the patient’s skin disease.

Field of application of Ichtholan®.

Ichtholan® is an ointment that may only be applied to the skin (cutis). However, in this case Ichtholan® can support the healing process of the skin if the skin is severely inflamed and additionally suppurated. Puss is usually caused by an infection of the skin with bacteria.

These bacteria penetrate deeper into the patient’s tissue through a small crack in the skin and then produce waste products, which we perceive as pus. Often the pus is then located under the skin and does not reach the surface. This is very uncomfortable for the patient as it causes pain and a strong feeling of pressure.

In addition, the inflammation can spread further and then lead to other symptoms such as fever, headache and fatigue. To avoid this, Ichtholan® ointment helps to transport the pus to the surface. Ichtholan® is used, for example, to treat a so-called boil.

This is a purulent inflammation of a hair that has its root deep in the skin. The hair root can be inflamed by bacteria and then a painful pus formation occurs. With the help of Ichtholan® this furuncle heals faster and more effectively.

Ichtholan® can also support the healing process in the case of an abscess, i.e. an accumulation of pus under the skin in a cavity that the pus has created. Due to its antibacterial effect, Ichtholan® also ensures that the inflammation does not spread further. However, it is important that Ichtholan® is applied as an ointment to the inflamed area of skin and then wrapped in a bandage.

Here it is very important that the patient works absolutely clean (sterile). This means that the skin should be carefully washed off beforehand and only then should Ichtholan® be applied, preferably with disposable gloves. Afterwards the dressing should be wrapped around the area, also with disposable gloves, and it should not get dirty or wet under any circumstances. This is the only way to avoid that the effect of Ichtholan® is reduced by an unclean dressing.
