Implementation of the corset treatment

If the indication for a corset treatment is given, the patient is measured by a complex procedure to determine the correct sizes for the manufacture of the corset. After the corset is finished, it is adjusted to the patient. It is important that the corset should be worn only for a short time at first and then slowly increase the wearing time. Comparable to wearing new shoes the first days a corset should only be worn for a short time to avoid corresponding pressure points on the body and to increase the compliance of the patient.

How long must a corset be worn?

After making a corset and at the beginning of wearing a corset you should first get used to wearing a corset. To avoid overstraining the body from the beginning, the wearing time should be increased with time. While in former times a 23-hour wearing time per day was postulated, today a more liberal view is taken. Studies have shown that a 23-hour wearing time does not further improve the final result, which is present with a wearing time of about 17 hours.

Although this is also a long time, the patient will be very happy to be able to take off the corset 7 hours a day. Most of the time the patients decide not to wear the corset during work or school, while most of them are even willing to wear the corset during sleep to get the necessary hours. In order to improve the result of a wearing time of 17 hours, a regular, complementary physiotherapeutic treatment is very useful and important.

A corset should be worn until the growth phase of the patient is completed. Depending on when a patient starts wearing it, the corset has to be worn either longer or shorter. However, from the age of 16 or 17, the patient would be advised not to wear the corset, because the spine becomes increasingly deformable at this age.
