In which foods is LDL contained?

LDL itself is not present in food, but the body forms it from the unsaturated fatty acids found in many foods. Particularly animal fats consist of many unsaturated fatty acids. Meat and cold cuts as well as milk and other animal products are bad for the LDL balance.

Likewise these “bad fats” are contained in frying and deep-frying fat. Also lard, butter, palm oil and coconut fat have a negative effect on the LDL household. Cholesterol-containing foods, such as eggs, also lead to increased LDL values.

Of course not only the individual food contains many unsaturated fatty acids or cholesterol. Also food, which is produced from them should one avoid, if one liked to lower its LDL value. All kinds of sweet pastry and cakes contain butter and are to be evaluated thus regarding the LDL household negatively.

Statins

In order to lower the LDL value, the so-called statins are usually prescribed. This drug inhibits an enzyme that the body needs to produce cholesterol. This enzyme is called HMG-CoA reductase.

By making this enzyme less active, the body can produce less cholesterol. This causes the liver to absorb more cholesterol from the other tissues. HDL in particular is needed for cholesterol to be absorbed by the liver. In return, the body does not have much cholesterol in reserve.

This means that hardly any cholesterol is transported from the liver to other parts of the body. Therefore hardly LDL is needed and accordingly also less formed. That leads in the long run to the fact that the LDL value sinks.

LDL value after heart attack

The LDL value after a heart attack is unchanged compared to before. LDL leads to an increased risk of heart attacks, coronary heart disease and other vascular diseases due to vascular damage. After a heart attack, the tolerable limit of LDL in the blood decreases (see above for standard values).

For this reason, the LDL value must be checked more intensively, for example by the family doctor. Too high values should be treated with a statin. In addition, the patient should be encouraged to do more sports.
