Indoxacarb is commercially available as a drop-on solution for dogs and cats. It was approved in many countries in July 2012.
Structure and properties
Indoxacarb (C22H17ClF3N3O7, Mr = 527.8 g/mol) is a prodrug that is biotransformed to the active metabolite only in the insect by cleavage of the carbomethoxy group. It belongs to the chemical class of oxadiazines.
Effects
Indoxacarb (ATCvet QP53AX27) is insecticidal against larval, adult fleas, and other insects. The effects are due to blockade of sodium channels. The substance can be detected in the coat and skin for at least 4 weeks.
Indications
For the prevention and treatment of flea infestation. It can also be used as part of treatment of allergic flea dermatitis.
Dosage
According to the package insert. The solution is applied to the skin around the back of the animals every four weeks (spot-on).
Contraindications
Indoxacarb is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity. Refer to the drug label for complete precautions.
Interactions
Drug-drug interactions are not known. In our view, similar insecticidal flea medications should not be administered concomitantly.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include transient increased salivation, pruritus, and hair loss. The drug may cause an oily appearance locally, sticking, crusting, and a short-term white residue.
