Inflammation after wisdom tooth surgery

Inflammation is not uncommon after wisdom tooth removal. It is often caused by pre-existing difficulties in this region due to the location or a more difficult tooth eruption. But also a tooth root left in the tooth socket or an inflamed alveolus can cause similar complaints.

If you follow the medical instructions, the risk of inflammation can be greatly reduced. For example, you should not smoke or eat crumbly food after an operation. In certain cases, antibiotics may also be useful, for example, if the area of the operation was already frequently inflamed before.

If an infection does occur, there are typical signs of inflammation, which appear after a short time. Despite taking painkillers – such as ibuprophen or paracetamol – the pain cannot be properly relieved. This is accompanied by reddening of the wound and swelling of the cheek.

Often the wound area is also warmed up due to increased blood circulation, fever is not uncommon. If the typical loss of function occurs, it can be very dangerous. An abscess raises the floor of the mouth or causes a swelling of the throat.

This causes shortness of breath and a feeling of suffocation. Since an abscess can also spread to internal organs, a medical examination is urgently recommended. A visit to the (dental) doctor should be made immediately after the signs of inflammation have disappeared, preferably in the early stages.
