Inflammation of a wound

Predisposition

Wounds can have various causes and forms. From small, rather superficial wounds to large, deep cuts, everything is possible. The size and depth of the wound, however, says nothing about its tendency to become inflamed.

What is important here is the origin of the injury and the contamination of the wound. For example, wounds caused by violent impacts with heavily contaminated objects are more prone to inflammation than wounds caused by a freshly cleaned knife, for example. Especially bite wounds and wounds that occur on a construction site tend to become inflamed.

People who have a weak immune system can also get inflammation from wounds more easily and more frequently. Several measures can be taken to prevent a wound from becoming infected. First of all, the wound should be cleaned by oneself and, if necessary, self-disinfecting ointments such as Betaisodona® Ointment or Betaisodona Wound Gel should be applied.

In addition, the wound can be protected from new contamination, for example with a plaster or bandage. When applying the plaster, it is imperative that care is taken not to touch the contact point with the wound, as contamination of the plaster can also lead to inflammation of the wound. Wood and glass splinters in particular should be removed from the wound as quickly as possible.

If you have problems cleaning the wound yourself, it is advisable to consult a doctor as soon as possible. This can also carry out a protective vaccination to prevent serious diseases such as tetanus or rabies. Especially in the case of bite wounds, it is also advisable to ask about the vaccination status of the biting animal so that the doctor can be informed directly about the necessity of a rabies vaccination.

If a wound has become infected, it usually shows a reddish swelling in addition to normal wound healing. The tissue around the wound is also warmer than usual. In addition, there is a functional impairment of the affected limbs.

For example, the finger can no longer be moved properly, or an inflamed wound on the knee results in a gentle limp. In some cases, the wounds become so inflamed that pus forms in the wound. If the inflammation spreads to the whole body, an inflammatory reaction can also occur in the whole body.

If pathogens can then still be detected in the blood, one speaks of blood poisoning (sepsis). Sepsis is a dangerously life-threatening disease that can be treated in an intensive care unit, but is often fatal. The first symptoms of the spread of pathogens throughout the body can be fever, low blood pressure and palpitations.
