Inflammation of the nail bed | Pain in the toe

Inflammation of the nail bed

Inflammation of the nail bed usually occurs because the toenail is waxed in. Pain, redness and possibly pus are indications of an inflammation of the nail bed. Often the affected area on the toe is very sensitive to touch, so walking in shoes is perceived as unpleasant.

The toenail may become ingrown if it has been cut too short or if shoes are worn that are too tight and squeeze the toes together. Therapeutically, anti-inflammatory and disinfecting ointments can be applied. If this does not help, the toenail must be carefully separated from the surrounding bed with a small surgical procedure at the affected area, so that the nail bed can heal again.

If an inflammation of the nail bed is detected in diabetics or patients with wound healing disorders of the feet, it is important that this is treated consistently and immediately. There is a great danger that the inflammation will spread and result in a large wound that is infected. In case of wound healing disorders, this is a great danger, which is why even small inflammations in the nail bed must be treated quickly. Prophylactically, shoes should be worn that provide sufficient space for the toes. Also, the nails should not be cut too short.

Inflammation on the big toe

Pain in the toe can also come from an inflammation of the big toe. Depending on the underlying cause of the inflammation, the symptoms may vary. The first signs may be a redness and swelling of the big toe.

As the condition progresses, it may also result in restricted mobility of the toe. The extent of the inflammation can also vary, and can affect only the nail bed or the entire toe.
