Influenza (Common Cold): Causes

Pathogenesis (development of disease)

The common cold involves the uptake of pathogens, usually viruses, into the nasopharynx. There, the viruses replicate (duplicate) in the epithelium. Increased seromucous (watery-mucous) secretions occur. The most common cold viruses belong to the viral genera of Rhino, Entero, Corona* , Mastadeno, and the family Paramyxoviridae.

* Coronaviruses cause up to 30 percent of seasonal colds in Germany.
