Ingredients of Ichtholan

In addition to ammonium bituminosulfonate, which is the active ingredient, the ointment Ichtholan® also contains yellow vaseline, i.e. pure fat, purified water and wool wax. However, the actual effect of Ichtholan® is also based on the ingredient ammonium bituminosulfonate, which belongs to the so-called sulfonated shale oils. The ingredient acts against bacteria (antibacterial) and inhibits inflammation in the skin. In addition, the active ingredient ensures that the pus reaches the skin surface more quickly and thus the feeling of pressure and pain in the skin disappears faster.

Dosage of Ichtholan®.

Ichtholan® is available in three different dosages. There is the 10-percent, the 20-percent and the 50-percent ointment. The frequency with which the ointment should be applied to the skin depends on how far the inflammation has already progressed.

As this cannot be assessed by a layperson, it is important to consult a dermatologist so that he or she can adjust the exact dosage of Ichtholan® to the severity of the disease. In general, however, the 20% ointment is usually used by applying it thickly to the corresponding inflamed area of skin and then wrapping it in a bandage. Here it is important that the dressing is very clean and that it is changed daily. Usually the patient has to apply the Ichtholan® ointment 3 days in a row to achieve a successful treatment.

Restrictions on the use of Ichtholan

There are several reasons why a patient should not use the ointment Ichtholan®.On the one hand, all patients who are known to be allergic to the active ingredients ammonium and/or sodium bituminosulfonate must refrain from using Ichtholan® because otherwise allergic reactions may occur. Also pregnant patients or patients who are breastfeeding their child should not use Ichtholan® because it is not clear whether the ointment could have any effects on the child. The use of Ichtholan® in children must be discussed with a dermatologist and should not be done without prior consultation as the dosages may vary in children. It is also important that Ichtholan® should not be used on mucous membranes, such as in the mouth. Contact with the eyes should also be avoided.
