Injuries of the cervical vertebrae

Accidents are the most common cause of damage to the cervical spine. Whiplash injuries (also known as whiplash injuries) are the most common cause of damage to the cervical spine. However, there is also the severe form.

This is an instability at the head and neck transition, which is very dangerous, brings severe problems with it and can lead to death. Symptoms can be: Further injuries of the cervical vertebrae are bone fractures. These can injure or crush the spinal cord and thus lead to paraplegia.

Bone fractures can occur, for example: due to osteomalacia, osteoporosis or a tumor.A special form of fracture is the so-called Jefferson fracture of the atlas, which occurs in only 1 to 2% of all spinal fractures. In this case, the anterior and posterior arch is broken and a ligament, the so-called ligamentum transversum, is torn. Headache and stiff neck can be signs of this injury.

Neurological failures are not expected in most cases. Treatment includes a halo fixator and joint stiffening surgery. Changes in the intervertebral discs can also lead to a slipped disc in the neck area.

The characteristic pain radiates into the arm (cervicobrachialgia). Pain in the cervical vertebrae is frequently encountered. If, in addition to the unspecific complaints, the head is also crooked, this is a strong indication of a cervical spine syndrome.

Degenerative changes in the cervical vertebrae due to wear and tear can lead to a narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal canal stenosis) and lead to the clinical picture of a cervical myelopathy. A loss of strength and increasing paralysis of the arms and legs occur frequently in this case. Rapid pressure relief by means of a stiffening operation (spondylodesis) is indicated in many cases.
