Inserts to compensate for the difference in length

A difference in leg length does not always have to lead to the above-mentioned consequences such as scoliosis or chronic lumbar pain. If it is detected early, an improvement can be achieved by simple means. Together with an orthopaedic surgeon, the best therapy should be determined.

Depending on the degree of difference, different insoles are used. These raise the shorter leg and straighten the inclined pelvis. An orthopaedic shoe with a raised heel is also often used.

A difference of up to 12 centimetres can be compensated by an inner shoe for the shorter leg by bringing the foot into the toe position. In the case of higher differences, there are various orthopaedic procedures that can be used to lengthen the leg by intramedullary nailing or shorten the leg by using an external fixator. An unconscious compensation of the leg length difference is achieved by tip-toeing and twisting the spine.
