Insomnia due to breathing stops (sleep apnea)

The big issue of sleep disorder covers many topics.

  • Insomnia
  • Problems falling asleep
  • Sleep through
  • Sleepwalking
  • Twitching in sleep
  • Sleep apnea syndrome (causes of internal medicine)
  • Sleep disorders (neurological cause)

Definition

Insomnia caused by breathing stops is divided into two larger groups. On the one hand, there are those who stop breathing with obstruction and those who stop breathing without obstruction.

Sleep-related breathing interruptions without obstruction

Sleep-related breathing disorders without obstruction means that there is no narrowing of the upper airways. These respiratory disorders are based on disturbances in respiratory regulation and respiratory mechanics. They can be divided again into two groups.

Both groups can occur without a previous illness, i.e. primary or as a consequence of an illness, i.e. secondary.

  • Central sleep apnea syndromes, where breathing stops
  • And the sleep-related under-ventilation syndromes (hypoventilation syndromes) and the syndromes in which too little oxygen is absorbed (hypoxemia syndromes).

Central sleep apnoea syndromes

The central sleep apnoea syndromes are characterized by an interrupted reduced or increased breathing impulse during sleep. This results in a constant alternation between increased and decreased ventilation. In the primary form of central sleep apnoea syndrome in adults, symptoms such as daytime sleepiness, difficulty falling and staying asleep and awakening with shortness of breath occur.

There can be up to 5 breathing stops per hour. The central sleep apnoea syndromes due to other diseases occur much more frequently. One example is Cheyne-Stokes respiration, which is often caused by heart disease, stroke or kidney disease.

In these cases, there are up to ten breathing stops per hour, so that the symptoms are significantly worsened during the day. The misuse of medication and drugs can also lead to central sleep apnea syndrome. Staying at high altitudes can also lead to central sleep apnoea syndrome. Symptoms can also include snoring, concentration problems and reduced performance.
