Intellectual activities | How can dementia be prevented?

Intellectual activities

Another way to prevent dementia is to challenge and exercise your brain regularly. Elderly people should spend a lot of time

Nutrition

Nutrition plays a central role in many diseases and should therefore always be considered. A healthy and particularly balanced diet can reduce the risk of disease. The intake of vitamins, especially C and E, are very important for the body.

Studies show that fish minimises the risk of developing dementia. The positive effect is believed to be due to the omega-3 fatty acids it contains. In addition, the ratio between polyunsaturated and saturated fatty acids is crucial and has a preventive effect.

High blood pressure

Permanently elevated blood pressure not only destroys the vessels in the long term, but also leads to circulatory disorders in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. These in turn accelerate the development of dementia. They are therefore a strong risk factor and can be reduced by early detection of high blood pressure (hypertension). Hypertension should definitely be treated and medicated, because it is not only a risk factor for dementia but also plays a role in many other diseases.

Role of sleep

A restful and healthy sleep rhythm is not only important for our mood, but also for the regeneration of the body. A rested mind and body can perform better. Regular sleep disturbances in the form of problems falling or staying asleep or even sleep deprivation can be very stressful for the body, especially for the brain, in the long run.

Sleep disorders should therefore also be investigated. Often a cause can be found, which can be either physical or psychological. Problems like sleep apnoea due to overweight can be treated.

Weight reduction, for example, is very helpful. Psychological stress, such as professional or private stress, often leads to problems in falling asleep, as people often find it very difficult to turn on their thoughts. Here, psychotherapy can be effective and lead to a better handling of stress. A treatment should then be sought.
