Interaction

Dexamethasone can increase the excretion of potassium and thus enhance the effect of certain water tablets (diuretics). This can be dangerous if the potassium level drops too low, as this can lead to cardiac arrhythmia. Dexamethasone inhibits the blood sugar-lowering effect of drugs used to treat diabetes mellitus and blood thinners.

Some antiepileptic drugs and antibiotics increase the breakdown of dexamethasone, so it is less effective. The combination of dexamethasone and painkillers from the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen significantly increased the risk of developing a stomach ulcer with the risk of stomach bleeding. If such a combination is necessary, a stomach protection tablet should therefore always be taken at the same time.
