The dosage of fluoxetine varies according to the clinical picture and can be increased progressively as therapy progresses. Fluoxetine is usually prescribed in tablet form. Fluoxetine can be taken with or between meals (with or without a glass of water).
In high-dose therapy, the total daily dose can also be divided and swallowed in several portions per day. Treatment with fluoxetine usually starts at 20 mg a day. This does not apply to the concomitant drug treatment of bulimia, where a daily dose of 60 mg is started directly.
In children and adolescents aged 8 years and older, Fluoxetine should be prescribed in the lowest possible dose and adjusted to body weight if necessary. In patients with impaired kidney and/or liver function, the dosage of the active substance must be adjusted accordingly. For the treatment of depressive disorders, therapy with Fluoxetine is usually started with a daily dose of 20 mg.
If the drug is not effective or has limited efficacy, the dose can be slowly increased up to 60 mg. Efficacy of treatment with a daily dose of 80 mg per day has not yet been sufficiently investigated and is therefore not indicated. Drug treatment of depression with fluoxetine should be continued for at least 6 months. The treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorders with fluoxetine is comparable to that of depressive disorders. It is also started with a daily dose of 20 mg. The dose can be gradually increased up to 60 mg. For the treatment of bulimia (mental eating disorder) a daily dose of 60 mg is started at the beginning of the therapy.
Price
The various preparations of Fluoxetine are available in different pack sizes (20, 50, 100 tablets) and dosages (10, 20, 40 mg). Individual tablets can also be halved. Fluoxetine is available only on prescription in pharmacies.
A 20 pack of 10 mg fluoxetine is available from a price of about 12.50 euros. A 20 pack with higher doses of fluoxetine (20 mg) is available for a price of about 14.00 euros. For a price of about 16.00 Euro, a 20 pack of 40 mg Fluoxetine is available.
