Interactions

Countersign

Contraindications, even contraindications, are reasons for not using a drug. In the case of Bepanthen® no contraindications are known. Since Bepanthen® does not interact with other drugs, it can almost always be used.

The only exception is the presence of allergies. Besides dexpanthenol, Bepanthen® wound and healing ointment contains various waxes and oils which are supposed to facilitate the application. So if allergies against other skin ointments and creams are known, the package insert should be carefully checked for all ingredients. These could therefore be a counter-sign for the use of Bepanthen®.

Dosage

One gram of Bepanthen® Wound and Healing Ointment contains 50 mg dexpanthenol. This sounds like a lot. However, such higher dosages are not unusual for creams and ointments, as the active ingredient first has to penetrate the human skin.

However, the skin represents a distinct barrier, which is why only a fraction actually reaches the skin and subcutaneous tissue. As no pronounced side effects or contraindications against Bepanthen® are known, the dosage can be adjusted to the individual situation. For creams and ointments it is recommended to apply a somewhat thicker layer and to cover it with a small bandage. In this way the ointment is continuously absorbed into the skin over a longer period of time, depending on how saturated it is already by the cream. Bepanthen® is available in tubes of 20 g, 50 g and 100 g.

Price

The price of Bepanthen® wound and healing ointment depends on various factors. The size of the package, the respective selling pharmacy and current offers have an influence on the price. The average price is between three and eight euros.

The price of other Bepanthen® products, such as Bepanthen® nose and eye ointment, may vary. Bepanthen® wound and healing ointment is available on the Internet and in pharmacies. Since it is pharmacy-only, it is not sold in drugstores or supermarkets.

When do I need the antiseptic wound cream from Bepanthen®?

The antiseptic wound cream of Bepanthen® is needed for wounds that have septic causes or already show signs of inflammation. Antiseptic here means that the ointment kills pathogens such as bacteria. Septic is something when it can potentially cause diseases caused by bacteria, fungi or viruses.

Besides dexpanthenol, the wound cream also contains the active substance chlorhexidine, which is responsible for the antiseptic effect. Causes of septic wounds include animal bites, injuries from gardening or cuts from kitchen knives. The reason for this is that this type of injury very probably causes bacteria to enter the wound in addition to conventional dirt and grime. For the treatment of such injuries it is therefore advisable to use disinfectant and antiseptic creams or ointments. These kill bacteria and other micro-organisms, thus preventing inflammation and the development of pus.
