Interactions

Currently, no interactions of clomiphene with other drugs are known. Nevertheless, it should be clarified with the treating doctor before the start of therapy whether the woman is taking other drugs.

Alternatives to clomiphene

Treatment with clomiphene does not lead to the desired success in every woman. In addition to clomiphene, there are alternative drugs that can stimulate ovulation in infertile women. These include hormones such as FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) or LH (luteinising hormone), which are administered in the form of injections. The hormone choriogonadotropin alpha (Ovitrelle, Predalon) can also be administered by injection to support follicle maturation.

Price

The price of clomiphene depends not only on the manufacturer but also on the package size and the active ingredient content. The price fluctuates between 20 and 35 euros. The company Ratiopharm offers a package of clomiphene at a price of approximately 20 euros.

It contains 10 tablets with an active ingredient content of 50 mg each. Clomifen is a prescription-only drug. If the doctor considers fertility treatment with clomifen to be appropriate for a patient, he prescribes a prescription.

Normally, women only have to pay the prescription fee of 5 euros at the pharmacy and the health insurance company will cover the rest of the costs. Clomiphene is a prescription drug. Clomifen can, however, be bought over the counter in various Internet pharmacies.

However, this is a drug that interferes with the hormone balance of the woman. For this reason, clomiphene should only be taken under medical supervision. The gynaecologist will discuss with the patient whether clomiphene can lead to the desire to have children in her case and what side effects are associated with taking it. The doctor also determines the exact dosage and duration of use for each patient individually. The doctor then issues a prescription which can be used to buy the medication in any pharmacy.

When does ovulation occur

It is not possible to predict exactly when a woman will ovulate under treatment with clomiphene. Every body reacts differently and some women respond very well to the drug, while others respond less effectively. Normally, a woman’s cycle lasts on average 28 days.

Ovulation occurs on the 14th day after the last menstrual period. During this time, the woman is fertile and pregnancy can occur if unprotected intercourse takes place. When taking clomiphene, the time of ovulation depends on the day of the cycle on which you started taking it.

If clomiphene is taken on the 2nd day of the cycle, ovulation occurs around day 16. If treatment is started on the 5th day of the cycle, ovulation is postponed by five days and is then around the 21st day. However, these are only very imprecise calculations.

There are some symptoms, such as a slight rise in temperature and changes in the cervical mucus, which occur when ovulation occurs. Since the time of ovulation varies greatly among many women, an ovulation test is recommended to determine the exact fertile days. It is also possible that the gynaecologist will determine whether ovulation has occurred every two days from the 12th day of the cycle using ultrasound.
