Interactions with other medicines

A complication was observed when taking the drug if polyvalent cations were added at the same time. This leads to an interaction in which stable and poorly absorbed complexes are formed. In addition, the absorption is further deteriorated.

Bonviva® should also be taken in an empty state, i.e. about half an hour before meals. Care should also be taken two hours before and after taking the drug to ensure that no calcium-rich foods or mineral supplements are taken. The drug Bonviva® should not be taken if you have an allergy or hypersensitivity to the active ingredient ibandronic acid contained in it.

In some cases it can lead to a rash or even an allergic shock with a life-threatening situation. Furthermore, ibandronic acid should not be taken if the patient has a too low calcium level in the blood. This is called hypocalcaemia.

This should therefore be eliminated before starting treatment with Bonviva®. Patients should also discuss the use of Bonviva® with their physician if there is a general mineral metabolism disorder or a severe vitamin D deficiency. Bonviva® may also not be used if renal function is impaired, for example, due to known renal insufficiency. The drug is also contraindicated in children and young people. There have not yet been any studies on the safety and efficacy of its use in persons and 18 years of age.

Pregnancy and lactation

So far, the doctors and researchers do not know any facts about this. However, the drug has been tested on laboratory rats, which eventually showed that the drug was toxic for reproduction. Therefore, it is also suspected that it has a negative effect on the unborn child in humans when taken during pregnancy.

Bonviva® is therefore also contraindicated in pregnant women. It is also not known whether the active ingredient ibandronic acid is passed on into the child’s circulation via breast milk. Here, too, there have been trials with laboratory rats in which a low concentration of the active ingredient in breast milk was detected. For this reason, as a precautionary measure, the use of Bonviva® is not recommended for nursing mothers.
