Interim denture without clasps

An interim prosthesis without clasps can be anchored in the interdental spaces by means of metal retaining knobs. Due to this design, the anchoring of the prosthesis is less noticeable, but the retention force is also not as strong as with the prosthesis with curved clasps. Some laboratories also try to make clasps from a gum-colored, flexible plastic (polyamide), which are supported by the gumline below the tooth. This type of clasp fabrication promises very good esthetic results, but the denture hold and durability is often insufficient.

How can you eat with an interim prosthesis?

The interim prosthesis can be used normally for eating. It remains in the mouth for the time of food intake and can thus help to chop and bite off the food. Since it does not fit one hundred percent as a temporary solution, it may wobble or slightly lift off when unilaterally loaded (for example when chewing bread).

This can make eating difficult in some situations, especially if you want to bite off a bread roll, for example, and the front teeth are replaced by the transitional denture. Furthermore, food remains can get under the prosthesis, which causes additional pressure and makes cleaning after eating unavoidable. The poor adaptability is also the reason why the prosthesis has to be replaced as soon as possible with a definite fitting denture. Due to insufficient force distribution, the bone is misloaded in the long run and can be damaged if worn for a long time. All in all, the interim prosthesis can be used for eating, but it is unfavorable for some foods.

Is an interim prosthesis also worn at night?

The interim prosthesis can be worn at night just like any other definitive denture, provided it fits well and does not cause any difficulties. The only important thing is that the prosthesis is very well cleaned during the evening cleaning. Especially for the interpersonal contact this is often very beneficial to keep the teeth also at night, because many people find it very uncomfortable to reveal the missing teeth and tooth gaps to their partner. However, if there are pressure points and it hurts when the prosthesis is in the mouth, it can be left out for one night.
