Internet Addiction: Symptoms, Complaints, Signs

The following symptoms and complaints may indicate internet addiction:

Leading symptoms (modified from).

  • Prolonged periods of most of the daily time budget are spent on Internet use
  • Control over Internet use has been largely lost or attempts to reduce the extent of use or to interrupt the use remain unsuccessful or are not even undertaken in the first place
  • Tolerance development over time to be observed, i.e. the behavioral dose to achieve the targeted positive mood must be increased
  • Temporary, prolonged interruption of Internet use leads to withdrawal symptoms (→ restlessness, nervousness, dissatisfaction, irritability and aggressiveness).
  • There is a psychological craving for Internet use (craving).

Possible accompanying symptoms

  • Loss of other interests and hobbies apart from the Internet
  • Neglect of personal care and personal hygiene
  • Lower grades in school
  • Sleep disorders
  • Social withdrawal
  • Endangering important relationships or the job through Internet use.
  • Neglect of other areas of life
